What’s Aligned vs Just Shiny?

In your career, you’ll come across plenty of shiny opportunities—the ones that look impressive on paper, spark short-term excitement, or come with a certain level of prestige. Each time, you’ll face a decision: do you move toward what’s shiny, or toward what’s truly aligned?
In the legal world, those “shiny” things often come in the form of external rewards or status markers that can quietly pull you off course. Think:
Joining a top-tier firm for the name, even if the culture drains you.
Jumping into trending fields like tech law, entertainment law, or AI regulation—not because they light you up, but because they’re hot right now.
Chasing big salaries or bonuses, even when they come with long hours, high stress, and work that doesn’t feel meaningful.
When I look back, I can see how often I said yes without really checking in with myself. On paper, things looked great - I was moving fast and hitting goals I "was supposed to" be hitting. But not all of it felt right. I was saying yes to what I thought I should want, without always considering what actually worked for me. Over time I started to notice the signs: a little more stress, a little less clarity, and a growing sense that something wasn't right.
Here’s the truth: alignment isn’t always loud or flashy. But it’s what creates sustainable, fulfilling careers. The kind that not only look good from the outside but feel right on the inside.
So before you jump, pause. Ask yourself:
Is this aligned with my values, strengths, and long-term goals?
What will my life actually look and feel like if I say yes to this?
These questions may seem simple—but they can change everything.
If you're ready to get clear on what alignment truly looks like in your career, reach out. Let’s build a path that’s not just impressive, but deeply right for you.
Your future self will thank you.
Cheering you on,
McKenzie
